The City of Columbus has proposed amendments to the City of Columbus Zoning Code, Title 17.

The proposed zoning amendments to Title 17 “Zoning” are as follows;

  1. To list “Three-Family/Apartment Building/Triplex” and “Four-Family/Apartment Building/Fourplex” in Section 17.28.090 “Permitted Conditional Uses” in the R-2 Zoning Classification.
  2. The proposed zoning amendment also includes adding the definitions of Three-Family/Apartment Building/Triplex and Four-Family/Apartment Building/Fourplex to Chapter 17.08 “Definitions”
  3. The proposed zoning amendment also includes requiring a 500 square foot minimum per dwelling in a Duplex, Three-Family/Apartment Building/Triplex and Four-Family/Apartment Building/Fourplex.

A Public Hearing on the Proposed Zoning Amendments will be held in front of the Zoning Commission (City/County Planning Board) on Tuesday, April 27, 2021 at 5:30 PM at the Columbus City Hall, located at 408 East 1st Avenue North, 2nd floor meeting room.

Road Closure

Starting on April 7th, 2021 there will be a road closure at the intersection of Johnson Bridge Road and North Stillwater Road to install a new box culvert.  This road closure is planned to last until April 16th, 2021.  Access to the West side of this intersection will be from the Spring creek Road and access to the East of Johnson Bridge road will be from the intersection of N. Stillwater Road and MT Highway 78, by Jeffrey’s Landing.

This Box Culvert replacement is part of the Stillwater River-2 M NW Absarokee bridge replacement project.  This box culvert must be installed before the irrigation water gets turned on for the year.  The bridge replacement will not be started until July 1st, 2021.


The Written Comment Period for the Stillwater County Development Regulations Hearing, held on March 16th, 2021, has been extended. The Written Comment Period will be extended from March 31st, 2021 to April 16th, 2021. Comments will be accepted until April 16th at 4:00 pm. Written Comments will be accepted via hand delivery or mail to the Stillwater County Commission Office 400 E. 3rd Ave N. PO Box 970, Columbus, MT 59019. All comments must include name, address, and be signed.

Stillwater County is required to have a Compensation Board which meets each year to determine the salaries of Elected Officials for the ensuing year. For that board, an organizational meeting will be held on Monday, April 12th, 2021 at 4:00 P.M., and a regular board meeting will be held on Monday, May 10th 2021, at 4:00 P.M. Both meetings will be held in the Commissioners’ Chambers on the second floor of the Courthouse, located at 400 E 3rd Ave. N. Columbus, MT 59019. The meetings will be held to organize the Compensation Board and to discuss: the process; the board’s responsibilities; time lines; pertinent information on which to base recommendations; and develop recommendations to be submitted to the Commissioners. All interested persons are invited to attend.
